In my previous article, I spoke at length about what Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) means and the different types of SEO. If you are new to SEO, you might want to read that first.
The key reason for practising video SEO is the same as practising content SEO. You want your videos to be more discoverable on search engines!
As mentioned in The What and How of SEO, YouTube is the second largest search engine next to Google. Since search engines cannot analyse content in a video yet, managing the metadata carefully is important for search engines to find your videos.
What is in video SEO?
- Video title
This tells your audience what your video is about, in a few words.
The video title also makes your videos more search friendly.
When someone searches on Youtube or Google, the search engine algorithm generates title tags from the video title. Videos are then read on Google as a web page, making it more likely to appear.
- Video description
Video description also tells your audience what your video is about, but in more details.
This does not mean that video descriptions are just random string of words put together to sound nice.Rather, video descriptions should be keyword rich. You can have as many keywords as you want.
However, to optimise your video description for SEO, the first three keywords should be of different density. To put it simply, density refers to the number of times your keywords appear within a video description.
- Video tags
Tags that you use should not only be directly related to the video but also consistent with keywords used in the video description.
Think of video tags like hashtags on Instagram photos. Having the right video tags will result in your videos reaching your intended audience.
Organising your videos in a playlist is one of the key ways to improve video SEO. This means that videos are put into relevant categories based on their content. See how playlist can make your videos more visible.
